Recovery Works

Writer: John ElvingJohn Elving

Denise first met Brother John when she was homeless, battling lymphoma cancer, and struggling with addiction. Her boyfriend, Mike, was also living on the streets, and John would visit them, bringing coffee and donuts.

At first, she wasn’t sure what to think of him, but he kept coming back with hope and understanding. He never judged her lifestyle but showed her that others had made it through similar struggles. Brother John was good friends with Mike, walking alongside him in his struggles. John was with Mike the week he died.

When Mike tragically overdosed and passed away, Denise was devastated. The weight of grief, addiction, and illness became too much, and she attempted to take her own life. In the hospital, John showed up daily, offering his presence and small gestures of care—bringing her cigarettes, candy, and reminders that she wasn’t alone.

Members of his ministry also reached out, sending Bibles, clothing, and encouragement. In a time when she felt hopeless, John’s persistence reminded her that she still had people who cared.

Today, Denise is temporarily off the streets, still battling cancer and addiction, but she’s fighting. She recently sought treatment again, knowing that the road to recovery is never easy. Through it all, she is deeply grateful for John's ministry—not just during the good moments but through the darkest ones.

His unwavering support, rooted in the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and a life of shared experience, has been a lifeline when she needed it most. She wants the world to know that recovery is possible and that having someone who truly cares can make all the difference.
